A railroad boomtown

Roanoke grew up around the railroad. The small village of Big Lick became a junction for the Norfolk & Western in 1882, was renamed Roanoke, and was chartered as a city in 1884. The early 1900s brought rapid growth as the railroad and industry boomed — and with it, block after block of housing built in the early-to-mid 20th century. What that older housing means for your plumbing

A lot of the plumbing problems we're called for today trace right back to the age of these homes:

• Galvanized-steel supply lines. Homes from that era were commonly plumbed with galvanized steel, which corrodes from the inside out. The result decades later: low water pressure, and rusty or discolored water. The fix is repiping.
• Cast-iron drain lines. Old cast-iron waste and sewer lines crack and corrode with age, leading to slow drains, recurring clogs, and sometimes hidden leaks under slabs.
